This is part three of a serial of stories, of currently indeterminate length. It was written by me ([personal profile] angelinflight) and Aisling ([personal profile] charcoalfeathers). (I write Cassie, she writes Autumn.)

The overall story name is something like "A Day in the Life" ... "A Day in the Life of Two Souls", that sort of thing.

Cassie

Her name was Natalie.

We met online -- one of those art forums, of course. She lived in Arizona, and she was into modern southwestern styles: swooping pieces of rusted iron emerging into primitive animal shapes, that sort of thing.

In the beginning, we were just friends. And then it started to develop into something else. We were friends, then best friends, and then we talked all the time.

I knew that it was impossible for me. I knew that it was probably a bad idea. But somehow one step followed another, and I felt helpless to stop it. And in spite of knowing that it was probably a bad idea, part of me didn't really want to stop it, sense be damned.

Then came the fateful and inevitable email exchange.

"Hey, guess what! Next month I'm gonna be in your area of the world for a business trip for my day job. We should meet up! Hang out!"

I wasn't sure what to say. Coyote had kept his little furry head down for quite a while, and there were no signs of me popping out into Autumn's world. I could probably meet her in this body, but I'd already sent her a picture of myself from the time that I had popped out.

Autumn

1.

I woke the next morning in the bed in my room.

Something was strange.

Suddenly I was completely awake. I reached over to touch the other side of the bed, knowing what I would find already -- an empty space. Because once again, the feeling of her presence, of Cassie's presence, was nestled in the back of my mind.

Throwing off my blanket, I climbed out of bed as I had thousands of times in the past. Walking to the window, I looked out at the snowy and icy white landscape. There in front of me, trees, snow, cars, apartment buildings, lay the expanse of my world, the world in which I was born.

I could use some of those green and hills, I thought ruefully. Strange things had a way of happening these days, though, and one had to watch one's wishes and thoughts.

"Good night, Cassie."

"Good night, Autumn."

We spoke these words as we always had, every night of my life up to then. But this night... Christmas Eve night... this night, everything would change.
